UK LEGISLATION:
The Race Relations Act 1976,
The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000
and The Amendment Regulations 2003
Introduced new measures aimed at ending discrimination against people in the areas of employment, the provision of goods, facilities and services on the grounds of race, colour, nationality (including citizenship), or ethnic or national origin.
Public Sector Bodies now have a specific duty to promote race equality. This will have a knock on effect in the Private Sector.
The Government is working to put an end to all forms of discrimination, by simplifying and modernising discrimination law through its review of discrimination legislation in Great Britain. This will make it more clearer and more effective, and will produce better outcomes for those who experience disadvantage.
The burden of proof lies on the employer. This means that rather than the employee proving there has been discrimination, the employer has to demonstrate that they have not violated the law.
